Price-Reducing Suggestions

SUGGESTIONS FOR REDUCING THE
PRICE OF YOUR SHELVING UNIT

If price is a major constraint for ordering the shelving unit that you have designed, you may want to consider one or more of the ideas listed below to significantly reduce the price of your HouseWerks Custom Shelving unit.

  1.   Reduce the Number of Shelves – Sometimes a shelving unit will be more visually pleasing if the shelves are not packed in to maximize the storage space – order fewer shelves and increase the spacing between the shelves. By increasing the spacing between the shelves you’ll need fewer shelves and you may like the open look more than you thought. Consider eliminating shelves from your design that are very close to either the floor or the ceiling. You’ll discover that they may not be needed and create a more open space.

  2.   Decrease the Length of Shelves – Because the price of shelving is primarily dependent upon the number of linear feet - by shortening the length of your shelves from five feet to four feet, the price of the shelves will be reduced by 20%.

  3.   Eliminate or Reduce the Number of Shelf Ends with Full Veneer Trim – You’ll avoid the $24.95 charge for each shelf end.

  4.   Order Standard Depth Shelves – If you order the standard 11" deep shelves, instead of 16" deep shelves you will save 20% on your order.

  5.   Select Wood for Shelves and Vertical Supports that is Less Expensive – Even the least expensive wood is still very beautiful with either the clear lacquer finish or the stain and lacquer finish applied.

    •   Substituting birch for walnut can result in savings up to 34%, depending upon the other options selected.

  6.   Reduce the Shelf Thickness - by reducing the thickness of your shelves from 3” to 2”, the price of Classic Style Shelves and Elegant Style Closet Shelves will be reduced by $1.60/linear foot.

  7.   Apply the Wood Finish Yourself – Finishing your shelves isn’t very difficult, only time-consuming. Instructions and tips are provided on the web site for producing quality finishes. HouseWerks staff members are willing to answer your questions and make suggestions to help you apply a beautiful finish to your shelves. You can save up to 25% by applying the finish to your shelves.

Select the following links for information regarding your do-it-yourself (DIY) finishing project.

For a shelving unit consisting of 15 linear feet of shelves and 10 feet of vertical supports, the material costs for your DIY projects are as follows:

    •   For $10 to $20, you can apply a hand-rubbed oil finish (like Tung Oil or Danish Oil).

    •   For $20 to $40, you can paint the shelves yourself. The shelves are lightly sanded before shipment. All you need to do is apply a primer coat and the finish coats of your choice.

    •   For $45 to $60, you can apply a stained finish with a clear coat of lacquer or polyurethane.
