Finishing - Fixing Flaws

FILLING NAIL HOLES AND
FIXING MINOR SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS
IN UNFINISHED WOOD SHELVES

If you purchased HouseWerks unfinished shelving, and are planning to finish the wood shelves yourself, there will be small nail holes and usually a few minor surface imperfections to fix. To achieve professional finishing results, follow the tips and suggestions listed below.

TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS

  1.   If you plan to apply a clear or transparent finish, such as a clear lacquer or polyurethane, make sure that you DO NOT try to fix the small nail holes or surface defects BEFORE applying a wood sealer. If wood putty, color wax sticks, or other similar products are applied directly to raw wood, a permanent, oily stain may result. This stain will show after the lacquer or polyurethane is applied.

  2.   Make sure that the products that you use are compatible with the lacquer, polyurethane, shellac, or other transparent, translucent, or opaque finish used. To assure compatibility, it is best to use products from the same manufacturer or products that are identified as compatible with your finish.

  3.   After the sealer coat has dried thoroughly on the raw wood, use the wood color or fill products of your choice to fill nail holes and make any needed touch-up to other imperfections. Make sure that you choose a product that is a good color match for the wood. Use sparingly!

  4.   Because the finish will consist of multiple layers, all of the repairs DO NOT need to be made at the same time. The application of coloring or putties can be applied in steps, each time being covered by a thin coat of the finish used. HouseWerks applies three coats of lacquer in our finishes. Consider using toothpicks, a clean cloth, or your finger to apply these products.

  5.   HouseWerks uses professional wood finishing products made by Mohawk Finishing Products. Check out wood finishing products made by MinWax or Sherwin-Williams.

  6.   To repair dents or depressions in unfinished shelves or vertical supports, place a clean, moist or wet cloth or paper towel directly on the dent. Move an electric iron (set on medium heat) over the area for 5-10 seconds. Repeat this step several times, each time leaving the moist cloth on dent. Check to see if the dent has been raised. Repeat this process until the dent has been raised level to the wood surface. Please note that if the wood fibers on the surface of the dent have been cut, the dent may not be repairable by this method. Wood filler or wood putty may be required.
