Floating Shelves

FLOATING SHELVES

Floating shelves are single Classic Style Shelves that are installed without vertical supports and do not abut a wall on either end of the shelf.

Because of the lack of side support and the lack of vertical supports, the only support these shelves have is from driving screws through the back of the shelf and into the wood studs in the back wall. This limited amount of support gives the appearance that these shelves are "floating," however, the lack of additional support is responsible for limiting the weight-loading capacity of the shelves. Floating shelves should only be ordered when the intended shelf weight load is to be light. It is intended to hold photos, art work, collectibles, etc. Floating shelves should not be ordered if many books or other relatively heavy items are to be placed on the shelves.

When designing floating shelves, you should:
    •   Limit the the Shelf Depth to 11" or less. The closer the front of the shelf is to the back wall, the more weight-loading capacity the shelf will have and

    •   Adjust the thickness of the shelf to allow for enough surface area on the back of the shelf to drive multiple screws into each wall stud. Shelf Thickness should be at least 2".

HouseWerks does not post weight-bearing capacity for floating shelves because there are too many variables associated with the determination of the maximum weight loading possible. In addition to the two variables mentioned above, other variables include:
    •   Number of wall studs that are used for attachment of the shelf to the back wall of the shelf,

    •   Number of screws anchored solidly into each wall stud behind the back surface of the shelf,

    •   Strength or rigidity of the wall to which the shelves are attached,

    •   Degree of equal distribution of weight placed along the length of the shelf, and

    •   Extent of weight distribution toward the back of the shelf, closest to the wall.

PLEASE NOTE !!!

HouseWerks is not responsible for determining the weight-loading capacity of any shelves we sell. To protect valuable items that are stored in and below the shelves and to assure personal safety, HouseWerks suggests that whenever possible, the customer add vertical supports to the design to create the most stable shelving configuration possible.
