RISKY DESIGNS

CHARACTERISTICS OF RISKY DESIGN SHELVING

If you were notified that your design falls under our Risky Design category, you are probably wondering which factors HouseWerks considers when determining whether a design is risky for HouseWerks to build? Actually there are no hard and fast rules for defining what is, or isn't, a risky design. Based on our professional experience, there are specific characteristics that often contribute to a design being risky, especially when two or more apply to the same design. The resulting shelving is often not very functional, practical, or attractive. Some of these characteristics include:

    •   Shelves that are less than 40" in length and have beveled ends (45-degree angles),

    •   Shelving units with an Inside Corner or Outside Corner layout configuration that have shelves on both sides less than 40" in length,

    •   Shelves with a length less than 24",

    •   Shelves with a wide range of shelf lengths,

    •   Shelves with a different depths,

    •   Shelves with a depth greater than 16",

    •    Shelves with a thickness greater than 2.25", and

    •   Shelving units that are built from any wood that is special order.

HOUSEWERKS RATIONALE FOR THE RISKY DESIGN POLICY

HouseWerks has a long-standing policy of building shelves to our customer's exact specifications. Another long-standing practice is our Risk-Free Ordering Guarantee, which assures customers will be satisfied with the shelving they order from HouseWerks or they are entitled to a refund, no questions asked.

Experience has taught us that some designs provided by customers may sound like a good idea and maybe even look good on paper. But when the shelving unit is built to those specifications, the end product is a disaster.

HouseWerks will build shelving in our style to any layout configuration or specification that a customer wants built. However, in order to maintain these policies, a limitation has been necessary to assure that these policies are fair to both the customer and to HouseWerks.

When HouseWerks receives a request to build a shelving unit according to a design that we believe may result in a shelving unit that is not pleasing to the eye, not very functional, and we believe that the customer may be unsatisfied and likely to return the shelving for a refund, we designate this as a "Risky Design." We inform the customer that the design submitted is, in our opinion, likely to result in shelving that is, because of size, proportions, layout, or other aspects that will possibly make it impractical to use and if returned would make it difficult to sell by HouseWerks.

HouseWerks agrees to build any of the "Risky Design" shelving units requested by customers, but we make it clear that we question the usefulness of shelving resulting from such a design. Our reluctance should serve as a red flag to the customer and should spur a re-evaluation of the design.

PROVISIONS FOR BUILDING RISKY DESIGN SHELVING

If the customer is convinced that their design is sound, HouseWerks will build the shelving unit based on that design, but with the following provisions and limitations:

    1.   Customer assumes full responsibility for the design and assuring that the shelving built from the design will serve the customer's intended purpose,

    2.   HouseWerks requires a materials deposit of 65% of total price quoted for the shelving unit before work begins.

    3.   HouseWerks withdraws the Risk-Free Ordering Guarantee - This is the guarantee which assures customers that if they order shelving from HouseWerks and don't like the product for whatever reason, they can return it and receive a refund, no questions asked. When HouseWerks revokes this guarantee, the customer cannot return the shelving because of dissatisfaction with the appearance, dimensions, color, or any other physical aspects of the unit.

    4.   The only guarantee that is given for risky design shelving is the Forever Guarantee, which warrants the shelving against defects in materials or workmanship. This is essentially a lifetime performance guarantee. If the shelving fails to perform, the customer is entitled to replacement or a refund as determined by HouseWerks.
